NextGen HeritageFest2021

The festival will open the eyes and ears of museums cultural and heritage professionals about how young people experience their offer. For young people this is their opportunity to be listened to, to be honest and to influence how heritage is presented, interpreted and understood going forward. This could be transformational as we are inspired to re-think our relevance to younger audiences which is crucial to our future existence.

‐ MDEM (Museum Development East Midlands)

The first ever event of its kind; bringing together young people from across Leicestershire to explore and share what heritage means to them. Due to the current Covid-19 situation, the final event has been postponed. We are working closely with our partners to arrange a suitable alternative date.

Our mission – Heritage is relevant to everybody!

Traditionally, young people either don’t want, or don’t have the opportunity and access, to engage in heritage. The NextGen HeritageFest aims to change this by:

  • Supporting young people to discover what their heritage connections and interests are
  • Providing young people a platform to share what matters and what is important to them, with each other, and with professionals who work with Leicestershire’s cultural venues, museums, collections, archives etc.
  • Helping bring heritage to life by empowering young people to showcase their ideas in exciting, engaging and non-traditional ways
  • Influencing how the heritage sector can feature young people’s voices, stories, views and interests in museums, galleries and cultural venues

Young people are the heart of this event!

The Heritage Youth Forum, a group of 6 young volunteers aged 13-21, are currently leading on planning and developing this exciting event.

Youth forum member Lauren, says:

“Collectively, the heritage youth forum has made many decisions throughout the planning and development stage, such as finding and securing a venue, choosing event and team names, designing a logo and setting a focus for our own project for the festival. I believe gaining this active volunteering experience will be significant to have and the opportunity has also reinforced why heritage is important to me.”
